Can we multiply every term of an equation by anything we want? How about an expression?

If it's a normal equation for example 2x+1=y , then you can multiply anything you want as long as both sides get the same multiplication. But if it's, for instance, quadratic functions, like f(x)=2x^2 + 3x - 5 , you can't multiply with anything you want at all.
