Jim drops an iron magnet during a chemistry lab experiment. She finds that it is no longer magnetic. What has happened in terms of its properties? a. A chemical change occurred that changed the iron in the magnet into nickel. b. A physical change occurred that changed the iron in the magnet into nickel. c. A chemical change occurred in which the iron remained iron, but lost one of its chemical properties. d. A physical change occurred in which the iron remained iron, but lost one of its physical properties. *** do not understand AT ALL. :( Please explain to

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for coming!! :) just wondering are you guys like really good at chem or something?

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

any options you have already ruled out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it is not a chemical change... am i right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because maybe the magnet fell out or something???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i right that it is NOT a chemical change?

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

you are right there ...go on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the only answer choices left are B and D yah??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i kinda think it is d. A physical change occurred in which the iron remained iron, but lost one of its physical properties. cuz it's physical property being its magnetism right??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i don't think it changed into nickel.... am i on the right track? =)

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

Yes ... you are absolutely right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is D then?? :)

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

iron can't just decide to turn into another element because you drop it... yes it is D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay!! thanks!!! :)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

if the iron turned to nickel that would be a nuclear reaction , a chemical reaction involves two chemical say the iron and the polyvinylchloride floor, or if the iron was hot enough from then bang to turn to rust , due to reacting with the oxygen in the air then it would be a chemical reaction

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

but the bang could not be of that magnitude

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

since iron acts as a magnet if its atoms are neatly aligned... dropping the magnet can change the alignment of some of the atoms...

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

weakening its magnetism

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL now i want a cookie! anyhow thanks for the help @UnkleRhaukus and @PaxPolaris you are the best!! :)

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

now i'm hungry.... bye

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha yeah... me too! sorry bout that! lol anyways bye now!! see ya on open study some other time then!! :) maybe today! hahaa thanks again! :) i gotta get some food now :)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the other way to wreck a magnet is to heat it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really? that's cool! i never knew that! thanks @UnkleRhaukus :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@PaxPolaris if u see this later, could you please give @UnkleRhaukus a medal?? I totally forgot to ask you if you could!! Wow!!! my bad!! :) cuz u both helped a ton!! but i could only give one :( thanks!! gotta get food now!! byeee :)
