In ancient Rome, who were the Plebeians? All free Romans whose jobs were on the low end of the social scale – farmers, bakers, builders, artisans, etc. Originally the class who formed the cavalry, but eventually became the wealthy class of businessmen. A privileged group of families that dominated the political, religious, and military leadership of the Empire. The property of others; usually foreigners, prisoners of war, sailors captured and sold by pirates, or slaves bought outside Roman territory.
