What are you trying to do?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
simplifying Expressions
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
Combine the like terms.
\[9x-4x\]\[(9-4)x\] You can then do the subtraction in the brackets. Leaving you with a simplified expression.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i dont know maths not my thing
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
9x-4x
combined becomes
(9-4)x
after subtraction you get
5x.
5x is the simplified expression of 9x-4x

oh so all you do is subtract
OpenStudy (anonymous):
what about this 2z+5+3z
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
Again, Combine the like terms first. so (2z+3z)+5
add those z terms together. what have you got?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5z
OpenStudy (anonymous):
or z10

OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
5z+5
because the 5 is on it's own. it doesn't have the z term associated with it.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so it would be 5z right
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
yes the 2z+3z would be 5z.
but in the original question you have 2z+3z+5. only the 2z and 3z get combined. leaving you with the simplified equation of 5z + 5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
6f+3+4f+5+10f i dont get it at all
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
Combine all the terms with f in it. and all those without an f. What have you got?

u get 20f
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
yes, and?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
good. Now put them together in a single equation and you've got: 20f+8
OpenStudy (anonymous):
28f or is it just 20f+8

OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
just 20f+8. because the 8 is NOT associated with f
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ooo
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok with this one -9g+8g do u get 1g
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
not quite. it's -1g
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh

Do you understand why?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no
OpenStudy (anonymous):
im trying to get it im no good at this math
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
Well like I said earlier.
You combine the terms into one expression. -9g+8g becomes (-9+8)g
Calculate -9+8. which equals -1.
So the expression becomes -1g.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok no i got it

now
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4x+5y-y+3x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
still don't no this one
OpenStudy (anonymous):
what do i do with the y
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
Combine Like Terms.
(4x+3x)+(5y-y)
(4+3)x+(5-1)y
7x+4y

dont get it
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
You're adding the terms together...
All the x terms with all the x terms. Then all the y terms with all the y terms.
Basically just rearrange the equation so you have all the SAME terms together. then simplify them like I explained earlier.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so 4x+3x=7x then what do i do with 5y-y
OpenStudy (phoenixfire):
you treat the lone y as 1y. giving you the same expression. 5y-1y. simplify that.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so its 4y
