Travis gained 9 pounds during the holidays. He dieted and lost 14 pounds but gained 3 more when he went on vacation. By the end of the year he lost another 7 pounds. How much and what direction was his net change in weight?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add up all of the pounds he lost total, then add up all of the pounds he gained total.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He lost 21 pounds and gained 12 pounds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So overall did he gain weight throughout the year or lose weight?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of the two values is greater? Did he lose more pounds compared to gaining pounds?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He lost more pounds than gained

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Net change would mean the difference between something gained and something lost. Using your example he lost 21 total and gained 12 total. Subtract those and that is your net weight. The direction would be the greater one of the two numbers.
