There are hypotheses and theories, and then observations and laws. Observations and laws are facts. An observation is something you see happening, and a law is a statement that says something will always happen. Laws are just observations that have been observed over and over again. A law is incontestable, there's no debating that the laws exist, because one simply has to look and see them in action. Examples: Force = mass x acceleration. Inertia is a property of mass. Offspring inherit half of their DNA from mom and half from Dad. Hypotheses and Theories are different, because they are not cold hard facts, but attempts to explain why those facts are true. They explain observations and laws. It can clearly be seen that there is a large variety of living things, the theory of natural selection explains how living things of one species can evolve into another type of organism if it helps them to survive. Theories and hypotheses can be proved or disproved. If a hypotheses is proven well enough, and is accepted widely enough, it becomes a theory. A hypothesis is a mere assumption or guess. Theory is a guess or conjecture. The two words are relatively the same.
