I need help..........pronto!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you wait a little so I can write the word problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah that's fine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A baseball pitcher makes 53 pitches in the first four innings of a game and plans to pitch in the next three innings. the baseball coach assigns a maximum of 105 pitches to the pitcher in the game. Write and solve an inequality to find the possible average numbers of pitches that the pitcher makes in each of the next three innings.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok lets start by figuring out how many pitches he has left of his allotment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, So 1O5-53=52

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok good. So now he has to spread those 52 pitches over 3 innings. To figure out how much he needs to average per inning, simply divide the number of pitches he has left by the number of innings he has left...so in this case 52/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

52/3 = 17.333333333

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey sorry my openstudy locked up. the pitcher has to average <= 17.33 pitches per inning the rest of the way to finish his 3 innings under his pitch allotment. Make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Kind of but is that my answer or do I round it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

According to the problem you wrote down, you don't have to round it to a whole number. 17.33 is rounded to some degree already.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh........ Okay! :) Don't go anywhere I need your help again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ha ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Describe and correct the error in the inequality. -4(2x+3)< -13 -8 -12<28 -8x<40 X<-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did the 28 come from in the second line? should be -8x-12<-13 right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay then thAts what's wrong. now how would I describe that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just scratch out the second line and write the proper inequality. There's another error at the bottom -8x<40 implies x>5. You have to flip the inequality when dividing by a negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>-5 is what I meant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that the description that I should write?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You should write what you understand. It's not going to help you to write what I understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops major fail! The -13 IS supposed to be a positive 28. :'/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok well then it's just the second thing I mentioned.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Phew! Okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the area question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I'm on the iPad so I can't draw......so I'll explain it. Area> 81square ft Then there's a square The bottom side is (x+2)ft. The right side is 9ft.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1346988158982:dw| Like that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to write and solve an inequality for it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And yes, like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok what's the formula for area of a rectangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a square. But the formula is length times with times two

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it was a square we wouldnt need any inequality..it's a rectangle. And the formula is actually length*width. So express the area of this rectangle in terms of what's given.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay................ X+2*9= x. ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Close.. Area = length*width so in this case Area = (x+2)*9. The parentheses are important. Now what else do we know about the area from the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That area =81sq. Feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well actually area > 81 sq. feet. Now just substitute our expression for area into that inequality. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+2)9>81 sq. feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right...so now just to solve the inequality. Do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, let me solve it and I'll tell you the answer in a minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sounds good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait........what's the first step again? Just to explain all the questions.......I just started seventh grade.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I figured...I remember 7th grade. So do you know how to solve it if it were an equation...In other words could you solve (x+2)9=81

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well to dumb it down I woul proBably subtract nine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first step would be actually to divide each side by 9... Then you would have (x+2)*9/9 on the left side which = x+2. On the right side you would have 81/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it thanks . Don't go yet because I have another area problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you solve the inequality?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well how about the equation? We got it to x+2 = 9 right. Now how do we get x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey....... So 9-2 =7 7/2 = 3.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why are you dividing by 2? You just want x alone on the left side. the first line is right...x = 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The equality is the same thing except replace the = by a >

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh.....okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x>7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well that was difficult.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ha don't worry. Just takes practice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so the next one is the same thing, but it's a triangle. Area=44sq. Cm. The bottom is (x+1) The left side is 8cm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok what should be the first step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Writing it in an inequality?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well seems like there is no inequality in this case so I would just write an equation for the area.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay........(x+1)8>44

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it's a triangle right so area = .5*base*height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so it's.......(x+1)*8. ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha that's exactly what you had before...should be .5*(x+1)*8>44

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the pickle is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm kind of a big dill

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's confusing you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't solve it. I wasn't taught that you multiply it by five.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll get you started .5*(x+1)*8>44 (x+1)*8>88 The rest is just like the previous problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks. Can you become my fan? And is it okay if I message you for help? Of course I would only message you when you are on open study.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah go ahead.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know anybody that is a really good "tutor" on open study?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cause you know.......... I NEED th extra help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ha the important thing is that you care enough to try to get help...you'll be fine. I'm not sure about tutors. I'm not an expert on the site. My friend helps make and run this website so I just come to answer questions from time to time. I can ask him.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh thanks okay...... Like you said i am trying to look for extra help because my dad says that if I do good in school I ll do goog in the future. specially with what I want to be when I grow up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And what is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fashion designer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah interesting. My girlfriend is an interior designer. Lots of art but it's good to know math too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's a good place to learn algebra: http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/index.html You should go through the basics section at least. It will help you understand this stuff much better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah especially when your trying to do the math of where all the money goes too. I'm not there yet, but that's where I'm going to need math. Ggood for your girlfriend, interior design is a really good job

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm actually taking art as my elective this year.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's great. I hope you like it. Art is a lot of work too. When my girlfriend was in college she had to do self portraits for 4 hours at a time and often worked all weekend and all night on her projects.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really wow! I signed up for art because I thought it would help with my designing.
