physics question inside

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

the block shown moves with constant velocity on a horizontal surface. Two of the forces acting on the block are shown. A frictional force exerted y the surface is the only other horizontal force acting on the block |dw:1347026373977:dw| What is the frictional force?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uh... The question says that the block is moving. It must be moving to the right since 5N > 3N. Therefore the force of friction is 3N. Is there more to this question? There doesn't seem to be any calculations involved...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

well the choices are A. 0 B. 2 N, leftward C. 2 N, rightwarrd d. slightly more than 2N leftward

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

I can't see two forces in the figure..

OpenStudy (ghazi):

2N

OpenStudy (ghazi):

body is not accelerated therefore total force on the body = 0 therefore 3+ frictional force=5 N anf frictional force=2N @lgbasallote clear?

OpenStudy (ujjwal):

I don't know but i can't see the magnitude of force towards right! This is what i can see..

OpenStudy (ghazi):

@lgbasallote ???

OpenStudy (ghazi):

and 2N leftwards

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it's actually rightward

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

and why do you say it's not accelerated?

OpenStudy (ghazi):

because it's velocity is constant

OpenStudy (ghazi):

a= dV/dt

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

oh yeah

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it said constant velocity

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

so why is friction rightward?

OpenStudy (ghazi):

i guess it would be leftwards.....because it always acts in the direction to that of the opposite direction of motion

OpenStudy (ghazi):

and bigger force acts to the right ....so block must be either moving right or probably left ....lol

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

but my answer key says rightward

OpenStudy (ghazi):

well you can say both are right.....it depends on your frame of reference he he :)

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

so you're saying i can either choose b or c.....

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i don't think that's a logical answer....there must be a reason why it's rightward

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i dont get what you mean

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

nope

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

exactly what i wrote

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

could be...
