If angle X and angle Y are supplementary angles, are they necessarily a linear pair? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Supplemetary angles are angles which sum up to 180 degrees. Now, take a simple example of two angles say X=45 and Y=135. Now, when they add, answer is 180 degrees, so there would be a straight line which implies that supplementary angles always pair up for linear combinations. Hope this helps.
