what is the function of active transport in moving small molecules and ions across cell membranes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Active transport is really useful when the inside of a cell already contains quite a lot of the molecules, compared to outside. Energy is used by proteins in the cell membrane to 'pump' molecules into the cell. eg. glucose in the intestines, or nitrates in plant root cells. The molecules move towards an area of higher concentraion, ie. against the concentration gradient.
