solve for X using the quadratic formula: x^2 +3x-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[-b \pm \frac{ \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac} }{ 2a }\]

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

do you now the formula? What is a? what is b? what is c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I knew all this but then over the summer I forgot all I need is the formula but is there an easier method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unfortunately there isn't.. I mean the quadratic formula can be applied to all quadratic equations, but most you can just factor to get the answers and there's no reason to plug into the formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't factor it cause of the 7 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup! 7's only factors are 1 and 7. So there is no combination through factoring that'll give you a sum of 3 for the middle term.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do the a b and c variables stand for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a, b, and c represent the coefficients of the variables. So the form of a quadratic is: ax^2+bx+c

Thanks
