Elliott went to the store for a bag of cookies. When he left, he gave his mom half the bag of cookies and one half of a cookie. He then ran into his aunt and gave her half of his cookies and half of a cookie. Continuing on, he came across his friend and gave him half of the cookies and one half of a cookie. If he ended up with six cookies, how many did he have at the beginning?

go backwards first step 6 x2 =12 +1/2 then go from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do not know how to move from there. i ended up with 12=12.5 completely lost on this one.

think about ended with 6 so 6x2=12+.5=12.5x2=25x2=50+.5=50.5 cookies 50.5/2=25 mom then he gave aunt 24 .5 left 12.5 friend 6.5 left 6

I came up with the total of 55. Dividing by 2, subtracting 0.5, /2-0.5, /2-0.5 and came up with 6. I do not know how to put this into an equation so I can solve it.

n= number of cookies (n/2)-.5 but this gives you 6.5 at the end

it works
