A few of these answers make sense. For some, it can be a test of their faith, but from the perspective of others, it's a day of rest and worship once they get to Mecca. Of course, making sure that food is prepared properly for the journey is also something of an important thing to remember. But the one reason that probably stands as the most important one is the one that has made this one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It commemorates the journey that the Prophet, Muhammad, made from Medina to Mecca with his followers as part of a tradition that stretches back many centuries. But on Muhammad's hajj, he reclaimed Mecca in the name of God by smashing the pagan statues there turning it into a sacred place. Hope that this helps!
