Can someone explain step by step how to do these two questions please. FACTORING a) 2x^2-15+7

What are you trying to figure out here? Simplifying?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no factoring

does the 15 have an x with it?

I assume it does. In that case you ask yourself what number times what number equals 7, but when those 2 numbers are added together equal -15? However, in order for you to even get the 2x^2-15x+7 you know you must FOIL 2 equations, so with this in mind you have to make up for the 2x^2, thus your 2 equations have to be.. (2x ) (x ) Now you have to figure out the signs needed.. So you know these 2 numbers have to add up to -15 but multiply to +7, thus both numbers have to be negative.. Thus.. (2x - ?) (x - ?) Now you just need to solve for the ? so what 2 numbers multiply to 7 but add to 15? well there is only one factor for 7 which is 7x1, but the choice comes okay where do you put the 7 and where do you put the 1? I think you can figure it out from here... After you figure out where the 7 and 1 go, take each equation and set em = to 0 then solve for x and you will get 2 numbers for x.
