Which of the following is equivalent to the proportion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3 \over 4 \]\[equals \]\[x? \over 12 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/4 = x?/12

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

What number do you multiply 4 by to get 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. 4/3 = 12/x B. 3/4 = 12/x C. 4/3 = x/12 D. 4/12 = x/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So you have to multiply the 3 in the numerator by 3 to balance everything out

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3*3 = 9 4*3 = 12 So 3/4 is equivalent to 9/12

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So x has to be 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright , so then where would i go from there ? if i have 3/4 = 9/12 ? would i divide ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm confused as to what would be my answer then .. i listed the answer choices above .

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok let me have a look real quick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okayyy

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ah i see what they want

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If you have a/b = c/d, basically two fractions equal to one another, you can flip both fractions to get b/a = d/c and this equation will still be true

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ex: 1/2 = 2/4 flip both sides 2/1 = 4/2 and that's still true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah so confused how to get that !

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can think of it like this 1/2 = 2/4 1*4 = 2*2 ... cross multiply 4 = 2*2/1 ... Divide both sides by 1 4/2 = 2/1 ... Divide both sides by 2 So this shows us how 1/2 = 2/4 is equivalent to 2/1 = 4/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (amorfide):

3/4 = x/12 this is your original equation there are things called reciprocals this is where you just flip the fraction upside down but if you do it to the left you have to do it to the right. so 3/4 flipped upside down gives you 4/3 but now we have to do it to the right x/12 becomes 12/x
