i really need some help

hartnn (hartnn):

on which topic ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

quadratic equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, i can help. post your question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did up to 55sqrtof -55^2-4(24)(-24) all over 48

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is 55 + or - sqrt of 721 all over 48

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i got stuck, i know i have to factor right?

hartnn (hartnn):

u have used quadratic formula to find roots, when it was asked to factor. if u only want an answer it doesn't matter what u use , factoring or formula...so do u want an answer or do u want to learn factoring?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i want to learn

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, so u got quadratic equation as 24p^2 -55 p -24 = 0 right ? now tell me 2 numbers whose product is -24*24 = -576 and sum is -55

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's the part that i hate, because it takes so long to find the numbers. there's no easy way to find them? or a trick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-64 and 9

hartnn (hartnn):

thats correct :) so u write your equation as 24p^2 -64p +9p -24 = 0 ok ? now what can u take out common from 1st 2 terms ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

p?

hartnn (hartnn):

p and ? what can u take common from 24 and 64 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

hartnn (hartnn):

nice try .... what about 8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then the other one is 3(3p-8)

hartnn (hartnn):

so u take 8p common 8p(3p-8) + 3 (3p-8) = 0 got this ? yes, other part is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which gives you (8p+3)(3p-8)

hartnn (hartnn):

excellent, u are good at this :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yeah right

hartnn (hartnn):

so your roots are ?

hartnn (hartnn):

8p+3 = 0 or 3p-8 = 0 u know what to do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so -3/8 and 8/3?

hartnn (hartnn):

exactly :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome :) u did most part of the problem...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uh is there something i have to do after that? because it says its wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply?

hartnn (hartnn):

did u write it like this ? \(\huge{\frac{-3}{8},\frac{8}{3}}\) no,don't multiply...

hartnn (hartnn):

@eli123 ,did u get it right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got it :) i had put the negative sign in front of the whole fraction :/ my bad @hartnn
