I need help using the distance formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My two points are (5,2) and (2,-2). The formula is d = sqrt of (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1). But as my answer I got 3.16?

OpenStudy (tyteen4a03):

Remember that you have to raise (x2 - x1) and (y2-y1) to the power of 2. The distance formula is \(\sqrt {(x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)^2}\).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok now I see my mistake. Let me try that again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its really the difference of the x's squared. So from 5 to 2 the difference is 3 so 3 squared is 9 + the difference of y's squared 4 square is 16 so 9 +16 square root is 5.

let me show you

|dw:1347390223053:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

difference of x is -3....squared is 9 difference of y is -7....squared is 49 49 + 9 = 58 sqrt 58 is 7.61 but that isn't an option?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok never mind my first point was (5,1) not (5,2)...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no teh difference from -2 to 2 is 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I keep getting it wrong. This was my last try: (5, 1) (2, 2) difference of x = 3 squared is 9 difference of y = 1 squared is 1 9 + 1 = 10 sqrt 10 = 3.16 my choices are 4.24 4.83 5.75 6.09 Heres the picture. They ask for length of line BC

hartnn (hartnn):

the points should be (5,1) and (2,-2)

hartnn (hartnn):

difference in x = 3 3^2=9 difference in y = 3 3^2=9 so whats \(\sqrt{18}=?\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.24 (: Thank you so much! I have to look at the questions more carefully..
