What is the length of BC? Round to the nearest hundredth http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/4ecb2897e4b04e045ae99da3-slumpx3-1321937058691-math.gif A. 4.24 B. 4.83 C. 5.75 D. 6.09 Okay, for this I got 5.65? not 5.75? Could someone explain to me how to get the correct answer? I plugged in the numbers to the distance formula: D= sqrt(x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2 and this is what I did: d = sqrt(1-5)^2+(-2-2)^2 d = sqrt(-4)^2 + (-4)^2 d = sqrt(-16+-16) d = sqrt(-32) d = sqrt(5.65) what did I do wrong, can someone please help me? I would really appreciate it! :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lets see

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you want to use the distance formula ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

distance formula : distance between two points : (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) d = \(\sqrt{(x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

distance between BC : (5, 1) and (2, -2) d = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, okay I see, then that means d = sqrt(2-5)^2+(-2-1)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Perfect !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and d = sqrt(2-5)^2+(-2-1)^2 d = sqrt(-3)^2+(-3)^2 d = sqrt(9+9) d = sqrt(18) d = sqrt(4.24) :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats right if you remove sqrt there, d = 4.24 ;p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh, lol right! :D

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good work :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for corrceting me
