If your squaring with negatives on a calculator do you put parenthesis around it then square it or do you just square it normally

so three line should be \[\sqrt{(-6)^{2}+(-2)^{2}}\]
next line is \[\sqrt{36 +4}\]
next line \[\sqrt{40}\]
