increasing the frequency of observations in the tails of a distribution will increase the standard deviation. why?

because of how the standard deviation is calculated... its derived from the sum of all the squared deviations from mean since you are adding observations from tails of distribution, the deviation (x-mean)^2 will be relatively large thus adding more to the sum , resulting in a larger standard deviation
