The price of an item is reduced by 30% of its original price. A week later it is reduced by 20% of the reduced price. The cashier informs you that there has been a total reduction of 23%. Is the cashier using percentages correctly? If not, what is the actual percent reduction from the original price?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

let x be the original price when it gets reduced by 30% you just multiply x by 70% (0.7x) <--reduced price now when the reduced price gets reduced by 20% you just multiply 0.7x by 80% (0.7x)(0.8) <---new price now... do you know what 0.7 * 0.8 is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let x be the original price ((x * .3)0.2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There really has been a reduction of 56%
