Read the following passages and then answer the questions. Talk-a-Lot Brings Daylight to the Inuit A Crow Brings Light to a Dark World The Inuit live in the Arctic Circle. This area is known as the "land of the midnight sun" because in the summer the days are very long. During the winter the opposite is true—the sun shines for only a few hours a day. The Inuit did not always have the sun for half a year. They once lived all year in darkness. Many years ago the Inuit lived in a black world. They hunted in the dark, played in the dark, and did everything else in the dark. They had no concept of the sun or the light it could provide. Then one day an old crow named Talk-a-Lot flew into a Inuit village and told the people a story about lands to the south that were bathed in light. The Inuit were fascinated by the crow's story, imagining all of the things that they could do if they had light. The more they talked the more they realized that they had to have it. So they convinced the old crow to go to the southern lands to fetch some light. The Old Crow Heads South Reluctant as he was because of his age and the difficulty of the long flight, the old crow headed south, grumbling and mumbling as his rusty, creaky wings fought the relentless winds. Every mile or so Talk-a-Lot cruised down to an oak branch to rest his weary bones, coughing and wheezing up a storm. But then he'd summon his courage and move on. The Old Crow Spots the Light After many days, the crow finally spotted a ray of light in the distance. With all the strength he could muster, he flew to the light. From his perch in a nearby tree he saw that the light came from a glowing circle of bright chips in the middle of a stone circle. People were sitting around this circle and appeared to be basking in it. "I will snatch one of those glowing chips," the crow promised himself. When the people fell fast asleep, Talk-a-Lot flew down to the circle and quickly grabbed a chip and put it in his beak. Then he headed back north as quickly as his creaking wings would carry him. Talk-a-Lot Is a Hero After what seemed like an eternity, Talk-a-Lot made it back to the Inuit camp and presented them with the chip. It produced a glorious light that delighted the Inuit to no end. The crow then explained that the chip would die out after six months, bringing back darkness for six months. During the darkness the chip would slowly regain its strength and then provide another six months of light. The people were happy just to have six months of light. And to this day, the Inuit live half the year in light and half the year in darkness. As for the crow, the people always treat him with the utmost respect.
