what is this symbol?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is sown in the example of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means "maps to", so if you have a function x |-> 3x+2, then every value of x is mapped to 3x+2. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry I didn't get it @Traxter can you please teach me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is -> & |-> are both same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, that was just my attempt at drawing the arrow lol.

If you have a mapping: \[x\mapsto f(x) \] It's basically just a way of saying "every value of x is mapped to a value f(x)". So if f(x)=2x, then: \[1\mapsto 2\] \[2\mapsto 4\] \[3\mapsto 6\] etc. Does that make more sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yesssssssss

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Brilliant :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
