I need some facts about how women were important during the American Revolution. Other than the obvious (Fighting, family care, house keeping, etc.).
Abigail Adams might as well have been part her husband's cabinet, as he discussed more with her than he did with anyone else, and certainly took her advice before that of, say, Jefferson. She was also an active intellectual participant in the Revolutionary War, although, like her husband, she did not pick up a gun. Martha Custis, by marrying a young penniless Colonel Washington, gave him his entre to polished society, and hence enabled his massive contributions to the stability and success of the young nation. Nor was her contribution to his stability limited to her money: she was a great support to him during the Revolution itself, following him to winter encampments at Valley Forge and elsewhere. Alexander Hamilton was born illegitimately -- his mother had fled an unhappy marriage -- and was raised by his mother alone, since his father abandoned his mother when he (young Alexander) was born. Unfortunately, she died young. Hamilton was apparently tutored privately in a school headed by a Jewish woman. Given the importance of young Hamilton's book learning to not only his, but the nation's, future, the role of this early teacher is probably quite important.
