Determine the direction in which the parabola opens, and the vertex. y2 = + 6x + 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe it opens upward

OpenStudy (dape):

There must be an error in your formula, since it doesn't represent a parabola.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is what I thought you are talking about + 6x right

OpenStudy (dape):

Oh wait, didn't see the 2 after the y. Do you mean y squared = 6x + 14?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so I think there is a typo with it but this is my choices A. Opens upward; ( -3, 5) B. Opens upward; ( 3, 5) D. Opens to the right; ( 5, -3)

OpenStudy (dape):

Okay, then it opens to the right. To see why you could swap x and y or just try to make a crude sketch.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then the vertex is 5,-3 i just thought the vertex could not be negative for some reason

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1348076765145:dw|\[x=1/6(y^2-14)\] it is a parabola and the vertex of parabola is given by the solving \[y^2-14=0\] it doesn't open upward or downward but right or left

OpenStudy (dape):

Actually, the graph cross the y-axis twice at plus/minus sqrt(14): |dw:1348076887273:dw|
