You're half right. A compound is a pure substance and can either be broken down into the elements that it's comprised of, or is simply made up of one element. It doesn't have to be comprised of the same element for it to be a compound. For example, water is a compound consisting of hydrogen and oxygen and can be broken down into those two elements.
