Find a general form equation for the line through the pair of points: 1. (1,-3) and (5,-3) 2. (-1, 2) and (2,5)

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

do you know how to find the slope when given two points?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Refresh my memory please. :) Wait, Y2-Y1 over X2 - X1?

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

right... so do that for #1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get 0/4?

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

right, so the slope is 0, which is a horizontal line

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

y=mx+b m = 0 therefore y=b

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

from the (x,y) co ordinates y= -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So there is still the x in y=x-3? Because I thought being that the m=0, it would make it 0 times x, which results in 0 or crossing the x out. Making it y=-3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also the y-intercept is -3 because the first co ordinates have -3 as y? What if the co ordinates were to have 2 different Y's like in the 2nd question

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

yeah sorry y = -3

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

for the second question.. slope is 1, so m=1 throw in some x and y values and solve for b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got 3 for b, thanks for the help!
