It all began with the end of the French and Indian War. During this lengthy war, Great Britain nearly doubled its national debt. Desperately searching for ways to repay this debt the British government started imposing new policies on the American colonies. Some of these policies included directly taxing the colonists and restricting them from settling in the west. One of the policies included that 10,000 British soldiers would be placed in the colonies to prevent fighting between the colonists and the Native Americans. Many colonists disagreed with these policies and ruled them as unfair. This anger eventually led to the Boston massacre. It was the evening of March 5, 1770. An angry mob of American colonists in Boston gathered around nine British soldiers (aka redcoats). The crowd started taunting the soldiers with wooden clubs and sticks. They even threw items such as ice and started shouting phrases such as “Fire!” After a colonist struck a soldier with a club a shot rang out. Then the rest of the soldiers started shooting which led to the death of 5 colonists. This event then being called the Boston Massacre. The jury and I have come to the verdict that the soldiers are innocent. The first reason why we decided the soldiers are innocent is because we believe they acted in self-defense. The two testimonies that brought us to this reason is the testimony by Jane Whitehouse and the testimony by Dr. John Jeffries. The soldiers had a good reason to fire, and if it were not for the crazy actions of the mob then maybe the soldiers would not have fired in the first place. The soldiers went through so much before they fired. It was only then after they started getting knocked down that they started firing. The second reason we believe the soldiers are innocent is that they were confused in all the commotion. Since people from the mob started shouting “Fire!” it is possible that the soldiers could have been confused and taken it as captain’s orders. They could not afford to be hesitant because when a captain gives orders they have to obey. And in all this commotion they could not tell if the captain told them to fire or not. And they were not able to take the risk of not firing either. The testimony of Jane Whitehouse was useful to us in this area. To conclude, the aftermath of the French and Indian War caused quite a stir. It resulted in the British government imposing policies that were unfair to the colonists. Which led to the unfortunate event of the Boston Massacre. Although 5 colonists were killed, we believe that the soldiers were innocent. Not only because they were confused in the commotion but also because they were acting in self- defense.
