A= {All even integers from 2 to 20, inclusive} B= {10, 12, 14, 16, 18} What is the complement of set B within the universe of set A?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Start with set A A= {All even integers from 2 to 20, inclusive} and expand it out to get A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20} Now erase any number in the set above that you also find in set B.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i get how to get the complement of B i just don't get how to do it within set A the complement of set B is {2, 4, 6, 8, 20}

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you start with A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20} then you erase everything the elements in that set above that are also in B. So you erase 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 to get B' = {2, 4, 6, 8, 20}

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

B' means the complement of B

I got that one but i dont understand this one: If the universal set is {pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters}, what is the complement of the set nickels?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OHHHH IGET ITT

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

set nickels = {collection of all nickels} universal set is {pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters} So start with {pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters} and kick out all the nickels to find the complement of the set of nickels

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's great

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANKS SO MUCHH!!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
