None of the above. US forces had no trouble at all defeating the Viet Cong when they met them in battle. Where the problem lay was in convincing the South VIetnamese people that their future lay with the government then supported by the US, rather than with the Viet Cong and their North Vietnamese allies. So no matter how often the Viet Cong were defeated, there were always more recruits from among the South Vietnamese civilian population. Progress was slowly made, however, after President Johnson replaced the US commanding general, William Westmoreland, with his deputy Creighton Abrams, in 1968. Abrams had a much better understanding of how to work with the South Vietnamese people, and not just their government (which was fairly corrupt and harsh). However by that point support for the war in Congress and among the American people had declined so much that when President Nixon took office, in January 1969, he was already committed to a policy of disengagement. That was achieved in 1973, with a treaty between North and South Vietnam brokered by the United States. Unfortunately, the guarantee of that treaty, which was American air and other support of South Vietnam if necessary, was abrogated by Congress in 1975, when the North Vietnamese re-opened the war. In one of the most shameful displays of betrayal ever, Congressional Democrats reneged on US promises to South Vietnam and did not send support. Not surprisingly, South Vietnam was quickly overrun and conquered by the North. A sad sequel was the flight of tens of thousands of Vietnamese refugees in boats afterward -- the so-called "Boat People" -- many of whom died from pirates and sharks in the South China Sea, and quite a number of which ended up immigrating to the United States, particularly Southern California.
Speciation comes from variations in the gene pool, but does not generally occur unless there is some physical separation of sub-populations, so that they cannot interbreed and drift genetically apart.
