Need help with understanding the difference between homologous chromosome, chromatid, etc.... bio book is so confusing when it comes to mitosis and meiosis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What I'm confused about is when you are in mitosis you duplicate a chromosome making sister chromatids, does that mean a chromatid is a chromosome? also we have 23 sets of chromosomes does that mean we have 23 sets of homologous pairs? Does that mean we have 46 homologous chromosomes? This wording is way too confusing for me.

At the beginning of meiosis we replicate homologous pairs but there is a duplicate homologous pair and a non-duplicate homologous pair correct?
