When a new color is formed. This is not to be mistaken for a mixture of each of the chemicals that were combined. For example, if a blue substance is combined with a clear substance, and the result is orange, it is a chemical change. if the solvent/solution stays transparent and the solute is not on the botom of the container the chemical  has disolved
