If f(x) = 3x + 1, then f(a + h) - f(a) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same idea as before.... :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(a+h) is 3(a+h) + 1 because you treat (a+h) just like the "x" in an f(x) function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you need to write f(a) also... f(a) = 3a+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so write it all together to get f(a+h) - f(a)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks (:

functions are like little rules that say, given some input, do some set of operations to get some output. It doesn't matter what you call the function ... could be f(x) or g(x) or f(a) or whatever... but however it is written, it is a rule telling you what to do with the input inside the parenthesis to get the output.
