Why isn't (4, 1) a solution to the equation y = 3x + 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If (4,1) is a solution, then you should be able to substitute x = 4 AND y = 1 into the expression and the result will be a true statement. If the result is something obviously false like 8=15, then the ordered pair is NOT a solution.
