Can anyone show me how to do the GCF for 42 and 48, with all the steps?
Okay, so GCF is the 'greatest common' factor which means what's the highest number that goes into both 42 and 48. Any ideas?
ok.. let me think about that
22/24 maybe
heyyyyyy
welcome back..and thanks for coming back
no 42 can divide 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42 48 can divide 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, 48 what's greatest common number they can both divide to? or 42 = 2 * 3 * 7 48 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 what factors do they have in common?
What you can do is write down 42 and 48 on a scrap piece of paper. Starting with 42, write down all the numbers that divide evenly into it: So we have 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, and 42 -- these are all numbers that go evenly into 42 (no remainder.) So what are all the number that go into 48?
They have 2 and 3 in common
After you come up with your list of numbers that go into 48, find the highest number that appears in both lists.
@nphuongsun93 4 doesn't go into 42 evenly.
So take 4 out of this
honest misstake.. we all make them.. at least I do.. that's why I'm here. So I need to remove the 4 from 42
Hello are you still here
You both left me, and I don't have a clue. Can someone please come back and help me.
Okay, so list out all the numbers that divide evenly into 48. We know 1 goes into it because 48 times 1 is 48 (48 goes into it too.) So you can write down 1 and 48. What else goes into 48? Does 2? Does 3?
Wowwwwwwwwwwww, what happened? Why did you both leave me?
let me get a pencil
I just popped out for a second to reply to another question. Don't worry. I'm still here. I get a notification every time you respond, so I'm not really leaving. :)
1,2,3,4,6,8
all go into 48 evenly
12
Sweet okay, now look at the list of numbers that go into 42: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, and 42 What is the highest number that appears on both lists?
did I list all of the correct number for 48?
Hmm let's see 48: 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,48
I see you got a big portion of them. Think about it this way. 48 divided by 2 is what? 24. So both 2 and 24 go into 48.
I left out 16 and 24
Yep, okay compare the two lists: the list for the numbers that go into 42 and the list of numbers that go into 48. Cross off ALL the numbers that don't appear on BOTH lists, keeping only the numbers that DO appear on both lists.
1,2,3,6, appear in both on my list.. hopefully I have all the correcct numbers in both list
Okay so what's the highest number?
Can you give all of the numbers for both list... so I can make sure I have all the correct numbers.? Thanks
6 is the highest number in both list.. if I have all the corrrrect numbers.
You're right, the GCF is 6. What numbers do you have? We got these for 42 earlier: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, and 42 And these for 48: 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,48
Thanks!!
No worries, mate. :)
Ok! Just wanted make sure I had all the numbers.
Hello, are you still here?
Did you leave again?
Yep, I'm here. What's up?
did you see my my response to your last question?
is 6 the largest number in the list for both numbers 48 and 42
You're right, the GCF is 6.
ok.. sow what do I do now? Am I done with this problem?
Yep! All you needed to do was calculate the GCF for 42 and 48. The greatest common factor is 6. Greatest common factor is just a fancy way of saying, "the highest number that divides evenly into two (or more) numbers."
ok Thanks
