how do you find the exact value of a square number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it's rational using your calulator

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

give an example and ill show you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jwheele1 sqrt(2)

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

i make a chart. To square something you multiply it by itself 1 time. 1* 1 = 1 2 *2 = 4 3 * 3 = 9 4 5 6 7 8 9

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

I do this on my paper for squares and cubes before i start my tests

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

the numbers on the right are called perfect squares and there roots are the number on the left

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

2 is not a perfect square so it not a whole number

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

sooo.....lets see

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

there is this website: http://www.wikihow.com/Calculate-a-Square-Root-by-Hand

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

Honestly...I mostly use a calculator.

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

answer: 1.414213562373095 lol

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

trial and error?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jwheele1 is 2 a whole number or not?

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

yes

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

but it is not a perfect square so the square root of 2 is not a whole num

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

that link shows you 2 methods by hand that i have never tried before

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya you mentioned a wrong statement in tthe comments

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

wait, what did i do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"2 is not a perfect square so it not a whole number" XD

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

OH...what i meant by IT was the square root of 2...IT is not a whole number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(2) isn't a rational number

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

true

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

it is 1.414213562373095

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

it is irrational because it goes on forever without repeating.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes
