can you explain the steps for ax-x=c I need equation for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Imagine that you have (-1)x instead of just -x. How can you distribute the x out of this equation: ax-1x You should end up with sth like this: (something)*x go from there and isolate x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what? i don't understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would you agree that your ax-x is equal to the following equation? (a-1)x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... did you see what I did there? I just pulled out the x from both ax and -(1)x. It takes a little bit of practice, but you've got to do that to solve your problem. Therefore now, you would have the following equation: (a-1)x = c Divide both sides by (a-1) and you would isolate x. You should be able to go from there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok great I got that now my next problem is y=(x-v)/b what is x I don't get this at all teacher did not explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hhhmmm What is the outside most variable?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what? I dont know what you mean by that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Problem: y=(x-v)/b Goal: find x First you have to look at this equation and ask yourself where is x. In this case, it is within the parenthesis. To get within the parenthesis, you need to move everything else away, which means the first thing you need to 'peel' away is the variable b. Since the variable b is under a division sign, you can cancel out the b on this side of the equation by multiplying both sides by b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so i did that.Does that mean i would have to add v to both sides to get my answer v+by=x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes!! Good work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks next is x/a=y/b would i multiply both sides by a so x is by itself? does that mean my answer would be x=y/b*a ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes!! You are getting the hang of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is my answer x=y/ba or is it x=ab/y Im confused as to how to write the answer then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Problem: (x/a) = (y/b) Goal: Find x Multiply both sides by a, thus the following: x = (y/b)*a Now you tell me which variable is a multiplied to...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiplied to both?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

unfortunately no... the answer becomes x = ( (ya)/b )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe if you close this question and post the same with a new post, you can get a better person explaining this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks so much for all of your help!
