If the argument below is valid, name which of the four valid forms of argument is represented. If it is not valid, name the fallacy that is represented. If I catch the bus on time, then I am not late to work. I caught the bus on time. Therefore, I was not late to work.

Directrix (directrix):

I know how to write this as a syllogism but I do not recognize what is meant by "four valid forms of argument." Could you tell me what those are.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not even for sure I was trying to see if anyone knew

Directrix (directrix):

p-->q p ----- therefore, q (modus ponens) and p -->q ~q ------ therefore, ~p (modus tollens) are the two valid reasoning patterns I know. There are two other invalid reasoning "patterns."

Directrix (directrix):

Do you think the statements you have fit this mold: p-->q p ----- therefore, q (modus ponens) where p: If I catch the bus on time and q: then I am not late to work ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think so @Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

I agree. p-->q p ----- therefore, q By the way, the three statements of a syllogism are known as the major premise, minor premise, and conclusion. Major Premise: If I catch the bus on time, then I am not late to work. Minor Premise: I caught the bus on time. --------------------- Conclusion: Therefore, I was not late to work.
