Calculus help please! See attached image. I don't know how to start this. I know we have to use Newton's Method: Xn +1 = Xn - ((f(Xn))/f'(Xn))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

draw the line tangent to the graph at \(x=1\) then see where the line crosses the \(y\) axis that is your next guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if X1=1, my f(Xn) is equal to 1. What is my f'(Xn)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you don't know it because you don't know the function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the idea is to find the equation of the line tangent to the graph, then set it equal to zero and solve to see where it crosses the \(x\) axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is your next guess, using newton's method. i will try to draw a picture because that is what you have to do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your first guess is 1 you draw the line tangent to the graph, and where that line crosses the \(x\) axis is your next guess. you see that you got closer to the point where the curve crosses the \(x\) axis, which is the point you are looking for

So all this is doing is illustrating Newton's Method. Is there a way that I can find actual numbers and not just estimating a number?
