Dale is asked to describe the energy of a cat sitting in a window. Dale writes that the cat has potential energy because of its distance from the ground. His teacher responds that his description is not wrong, but that it could be better. How could Dale improve his answer?
He should formulate his answer in Differences of potential energy relative to heights: floor, ground, well-bottom, australia.... etc.
let's say cat's potential energy is function of height then at surface of earth h=0 and U=0 and at certain height 'h' it is U(h)=m*g*h therefore potential energy of cat = U(h)-U(ground)
Dale needs to specify his reference first. ( If only potential energy is required.) Also, mgh is a simplified version of gravitational potential, as earth isn't a good homogeneous sphere at all !
if cat is sitting in the window, which is in the middle of home, refrence point will not be the ground,it will be the room itself...hence refrnce point should mst be taken appropriately..
