y = -x + 5

zepdrix (zepdrix):

need help graphing it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes please! I'm not sure if it's just a straight line across the graph or something, with this negative in here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative means negative slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, when I mean straight across, I mean just a straight x or y line. Whoopsie. I don't know what to do with a negative x by itself.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

It's in the form that we like to see :) y=mx+b b is where the line lands on the y-axis. m is the slope of the function. our b in this case is 5, so we can write that as an ordered pair (0,5). to graph, plug a value in for x, and then solve for y. write the value down as an ordered pair. example: y=-x+5 y=-1+5 --> y=4 --> (1,4)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

The negative on the x is letting you know that the line has a negative slope. Meaning: as you move to the RIGHT, the line should be moving downward. After you get some points plotted, and draw a line through those points, you should check to make sure that it's moving DOWARD to the RIGHT. :)

Thank you! I feel silly for getting stuck on this, I've done it before, but yeah.
