how do you factor 4x^2-12x+9

hartnn (hartnn):

hint: its a perfect square

hartnn (hartnn):

split -12x as -6x-6x

hartnn (hartnn):

then take 2x common from 1st 2 terms and -3 common from last 2 terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find factors of coefficients of x^2 and constant term such that its factors sum up to -12. 4*9 36*1 6*6 we know that -6+(-6) will result in -12. so, 4x^2-12x+9 = 4x^2-6x-6x+9 taking common, by grouping into 2 terms. = 2x(2x-3)-3(2x-3) = (2x-3)(2x-3)
