What's the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But its already been answered . . Thanks though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I saw all that, but there is still no question provided (i.e. no sentence ending with a question mark). I have to assume that it means to select the likely unstated meaning of the passage, but there really isn't enough context. I can make a guess based on the tone of "I can allow no going behind our backs by any roundabout means." that the speaker is insecure - leading to option (D). It also mentions fear, as does option (B), but option (B) mentions another character's name, Hovstad, that isn't mentioned anywhere in the passage. There is no logical justification for either (A) or (C).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Cosmoogirl - are you sure you've received the correct answer and understand why it is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No i'm still not sure . . My 1st guess was D which made the most since to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't see anything in that passage that makes it *obvious* that Peter is a lawyer. That claim is logically unjustifiable. There is no mention in the passage of a brother or a character named, Hovstad, and it isn't said who Peter is talking to at all. Certain key words, such as "emphatically" and "no going behind our backs" elicit a tone of fear and/or insecurity. I don't know what 'the Baths' are, but what in particular Peter is talking about here isn't relevant to the overall meaning.
