4 3/5 - 2 1/5

Directrix (directrix):

@grapehead --> Do you recognize 4 3/5 as a mixed number? Post yes or no.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

Directrix (directrix):

@grapehead --> Read this: Definition of Mixed Number A number that is the sum of a whole number and a proper fraction is called a mixed number. In other words, a mixed number is a number that has a whole number part and a fractional part. In the mixed number 4 and 3/5, 4 is the whole number and 3/5 is the proper fraction.

Directrix (directrix):

To subtract these: 4 3/5 - 2 1/5, think of it as 4 + 3/5 - 2 - 1/5 which is (4 - 2) +( 3/5 - 1/5). Your turn: Simplify (4 - 2) and then ( 3/5 - 1/5).

ive got the part you showed me but (3/5- 1/5). i dont understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 1/5 is that the answer

Directrix (directrix):

2 1/5 or 2 2/5? 3/5 and 1/5 are like terms. They have the same last name of fifth. So, three-fifths minus one-fifth = how many fifths?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i dont have like terms what rule would apply

Directrix (directrix):

So, 4 3/5 - 2 1/5 = 2 2/5. If you do not have like terms, then you find a common denominator which would give the two fractions denominators that ARE like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aright i think i understand now.
