What is the significance of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in the fight for civil rights for racial minorities?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An American belief in fairness is basic to present-day U.S. society. Consequently, the use of personal traits such as race, gender (sex of the person), or nationality to legally set apart one group of people from others raises serious concerns over human equality. Following the American Civil War (18615), Congress passed three new amendments to the Constitution, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth amendments. Collectively known as the Civil Rights Amendments, their main purpose was to abolish slavery, provide citizenship to the newly-freed slaves, and to guarantee their civil rights.

is that it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13th abolished slavery. Left many people without. No rights because blacks where considered not citizens. This gave them and women protection, also used this in the meranda act. Due process... Gave equality before the law... Also gave Congress the right to reduce congressional representation of states that withheld sufferage and voting rights.

Racial minorities had no right to anything. No protection and no way to vote to change anything. Till the 14th

it was only guarantee rights of citizenship to former slaves
