5x+8y=1 x+y=2

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

Can u plz tell me vat u get when u multiply the second equation by 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are solving by substitution.

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

No elimination. Do u want to solve it by substitution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (amorfide):

there are two methods, one method is the way @ajprincess is about to explain, i will explain the other method you have 5x+8y=1 x+y=2 you can re arrange the second equation to get x= or y= i will rearrange to get y= y=2-x now we have a value for y kind of... now we will substitute this into the first equation 5x+8(2-x)=1 5x+16-8x=1 -3x=-15 3x=15 x=15/3 x=5 we have x value now we can substitute the value for x into the first equation again, to find out y 5(5)+8y=1 25+8y=1 8y=-24 y=-24/8 y=-3 x=5 y=-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok i See where I went wrong. Thank you!

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

Gud explanation @amorfide:)

OpenStudy (amorfide):

thank you! sorry... didn't mean to steal your thunder xD

OpenStudy (ajprincess):
