re arrange the first equation so that x is the subject
can you do that?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5y=32-x?
OpenStudy (amorfide):
make it x=
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x=5y-32?
OpenStudy (amorfide):
x=5y+32

OpenStudy (amorfide):
now go to the second equation, and replace x with (5y+32)
OpenStudy (amorfide):
work out the y value, then substitute your y value into the second equation again, to work out x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8y-9(5y+32)=-103?
OpenStudy (amorfide):
yes
now you multiply out the bracket
rewrite your equation
move constants to one side
move unknown to its own side
then make y the subject
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do i combined the like terms or multiply them?

this doesnt make any sense
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I get stuck after 8y-9x+37=-103
OpenStudy (anonymous):
how do I combined the like terms?
OpenStudy (amorfide):
x-5y=32
8y-9x=-103
rearrange first equation
x=5y+32
substitute x into second equation
8y-9(5y+32)=-103
8y-45y-288=-103
37y=-185
y=-185/37
y=-5
substitute y into second equation
8(-5)-9x=-103
-40-9x=-103
9x=63
x=7
