OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

Why does water extinguish fires?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it gives out oxygen which supports combustion

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

doesn't combustion create fire?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it gives enough hydrogen to stop the combustion..

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

how does hydrogen stop combustion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, it creates fire..thats why they are used only in class A fires....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not hydrogen which stops it, its the air pressurized water

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

if oxygen creates fire...how does water extinguish fire?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

carbon dioxide too...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

for some odd reason..oxygen seems to extinguish fire

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok fine.. just guessing!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not oxygen, the air is used as the propellant and water is just expellant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see, if you normally pour water, it may increase fire...you have to use pressurized air which does the job

OpenStudy (anonymous):

carbon dioxide does not supprt combustion....it is used for higher degree fires such as in industries

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so is it clear?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

indeed
