What is the graph of the absolute value equation? y = 5|x|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (wach):

The graph of an absolute value equation is a V-shape.

OpenStudy (wach):

But what does absolute value do to a number? It makes it always positive. So the graph should be positive and point upwards.

OpenStudy (wach):

The 5 makes the slope more dramatic. Try multiplying numbers by 5 to demonstrate this: 1 x 5 = 5, 2 x 5 = 10, 4 x 5 = 20

Or rather, a negative value is made a positive value so the negative side is flipped up along the x-axis.

OpenStudy (wach):

Therefore, the slope points will increase very dramatically and the link should become more vertical, if that makes sense.

OpenStudy (wach):

Yes ^

@xKingx - The graph should make sense if you try plugging in values for x, and the finding y to find a coordinate. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I get the first part, but how would I use x to find y?
