OpenStudy (espex):

You an start by taking your equation, removing the parenthesis, \[( -7+4a-a^2)+(-2a+5a^2-10) \rightarrow -7+4a-a^2-2a+5a^2-10\] and putting each of the terms that have the same power of variable together \[-7+4a-a^2-2a+5a^2-10 \rightarrow -a^2+5a^2-2a+4a-7-10\] All that is left is to combine them.

OpenStudy (precal):

remember the only reason you can remove the parenthesis is because you are distributing a +1 and +1 * a=a
